#Bring Your Dog To Work

FAQ

1. Why does the SPCA support bringing dogs to work?

There are many benefits of having dogs in the workplace. Studies have shown that the presence of a dog at the workplace not only promotes positivity, builds workplace relationships but also leads to a more focused and motivated work environment.

Having a dog at workplaces also highlights the joy of canine companionship which helps bring awareness and support to rescue organisations when it comes to helping dogs in need through fostering and adoption.

2. Why don't we just bring dogs to work on one specific day?

To promote pet-inclusivity, it is not just about allowing dogs in for one day but making it more of a permanent affair.

Also, we want the conditions to be pleasant for both dogs and colleagues by avoiding situations where too many dogs are crowded on the same day.

We also recommend large companies survey staff and considering rostering days should there be large demand to participate.

3. Why is pet-inclusivity important?

One of the SPCAs initiatives is to develop a more pet inclusive community in Hong Kong so that our companion animals can have their basic needs met and they can live safe, happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.

Also by actively driving new pet initiatives for pet owners and non-pet owners, we aim to create a community which is kinder and more compassionate towards animals so that all humans and animals can live together in harmony.

4. Why just bring your dogs and not other pets?

We understand that pets are an important part of our lives, and many pet owners would love to bring their other furry or feathered friends to work. However, when it comes to allowing pets in the workplace, we primarily focus on dogs for a few reasons.

In general, dogs are social creatures and are able to quickly acclimitise to new environments as they regularly go outside on a daily basis, therefore they are more suitable to bring to work.

Other pets, such as cats or smaller furry friends can be more wary. For example, cats are natural independent hunters and may not feel as comfortable in unfamiliar environments. They are much more sensitive to new surroundings, therefore might not be suited at workplaces.

Smaller animals may want to burrow, hide, and chew. While these behaviours are natural, it may pose a challenge in an office setting where it may be unsafe and cause discomfort for the pet.

In addition, there may be conflict between the different types of animals which may have a predator - prey relationship which would unnecessarily stress the “prey” animals and could trigger unexpected reactions and accidents.

5. Can I bring any kind of dog to work?

Dog owners should also follow any company guidelines set for the event such as size restrictions.

Dog owners should know their dog’s personality best and assess if the dog will enjoy the experience of going into work. Check with your colleagues to see if their dogs are human-loving or dog-loving so as to set some interaction rules in advance. Put your dog’s welfare first, not all dogs are “office dogs” and that is okay!
